We are happy to announce that Mayor of Sopot, Mr. Jacek Karnowski was kind enough to accept our club’s honorary membership as a humble token of appreciation for his hard work for wellbeing of Sopot’s inhabitants and for war refugees from Ukraine.
Sopot organized 3 dormitories and a help center for Ukrainians who fled Ukraine, mainly women with children and elderly. Our club with a great financial help from Rotary District 2231, our partner club Rotary Hannover Ballhof and JYSK bought home aplainces, linen, furniture, computers and we’re going to send another tranche of a material help for them soon after an appeal of Magdalena Czarzyńska-Jachim, deputy mayor of Sopot, responsible for social policy in the city, who was also present at the meeting. Altogether our club spent almost 240 000 PLN on those projects.
This is yet an another confirmation, that Rotary Clubs could succesfully work with a local government to achieve bigger goals.
The meeting ended by happy memories from a trip to Memphis, USA shared by young artists who won an art competition, and the trip was an award for it.. For these young ladies – Pola Król, Apolonia Szukała, Julia Mierzwa, Malwina Sterańska it was an eye-opening experience. Comparing lifestyles and culture, meeting with young Americans, person to person contacts, also with members of Rotary Clubs in Memphis helped them to better understand world and to know that even a that short stay would have an educational impact on both sides. We were trully amused!
